Engineering Concept:
As a result of a major fire broke out in part of the King Salman Axis Bridge (Al-Zumar Axis) on the Ring Road, Which led to damage to parts of the concrete bridge, exactly some of the main bridge's columns, column’s caps, and the bottom of some concrete beams as well. In addition to the damage of the bearings of the bridge above these columns.
The solution was to repair the damaged parts first and renew them completely, after that the process of lifting the bridge started to change, and replacing the damaged bearings with new ones.
Fast Track Solution:
1st Phase: Repairing defective concrete elements of the bridge:-
· First, we removed and scraped all the burnt and damaged plaster and paint from the surface of the concrete elements.
· After that, we removed the concrete cover of the elements and exposed the reinforcement rebar. And we cleaned the uncovered surfaces using special liquids.
· We carried out the process of perforating the concrete elements and preparing them for the planting process of new reinforcing bars using bonding epoxies according to the consultant’s recommendations and the standard specifications. Then we recast it using a special concrete mix.
· Finally, we began plastering and painting work to complete the renovation phase of these concrete elements.
2nd Phase: lift and replace the bridge’s bearings:-
· Based on the bridge loads and our calculations and drawings we determined the lifting points and the required number of the Hydraulic Lifting Jacks.
· We placed the jacks at the lifting points, then we started to lift the bridge until we reached the required height.
· Now, we freed the defected bearings and our skilled labors replaced all of them by the new ones.
